Fingerprint time tracking
Your fingerprint. Never its image.

Fingerprints and GDPR, in short
A fingerprint is biometric data, which is a special category of data under Article 9 of the GDPR. Using it for time tracking is not prohibited, but the employer must be able to justify why it is necessary and proportionate, and document that decision.
Creasoft’s position: the use of fingerprint time tracking must be assessed by each employer, together with the justification for the choice, the information given to employees and the alternatives offered to them. The technical assessment describes the reader’s characteristics; analysing the specific situation is the responsibility of the employer and its specialists.
What the employer usually prepares
- A necessity and proportionality note: why a card or phone is not enough
- A data protection impact assessment (DPIA)
- Information for employees and, where applicable, alternatives for those who do not want to use their fingerprint
- A data retention and deletion policy
- Updated internal regulations
Creasoft clients who use or choose fingerprint time tracking receive a set of document templates, as recommendations, to be adapted together with the company’s legal adviser.
Frequently asked questions.
Is fingerprint time tracking legal?
The GDPR does not prohibit fingerprint time tracking, but treats it as processing of biometric data. The employer must justify necessity and proportionality, inform employees and document the decision. For the company’s specific situation, the analysis is done by its legal adviser or data protection officer.
Is the fingerprint image stored?
No. The reader turns the fingerprint into an encrypted digital code, and the image is not kept.
What alternatives are there if an employee does not want to use their fingerprint?
An RFID card or a phone, through the Creasoft Pass app, works on the same terminals.
